Rutgers May 22nd Presentation
Rutgers Planners Have Ideas for Long Hill
The citizens of Long Hill Township and the Planning Board are about to see the results of a graduate studio in planning conducted by the E.J. Bloustein School of Planning and Public Policy, Rutgers University. Informal discussions with the student participants will begin at 7:30 PM followed by a formal presentation before the Planning Board at the beginning of its regular meeting scheduled for 8 PM, Tuesday, May 22nd at Long Hill Township Hall.
As the capstone experience in their graduate degree program in planning, Rutgers students study a different town each semester. This spring, they focused on Long Hill Township. Fourteen graduate students, under the direction of Prof. Clinton Andrews, got to know Long Hill well during the past 15 weeks. Between the kickoff visit to Township Hall in January and their May 22nd final presentation, the students interviewed township officials, visited every corner of the town, gathered documents, prepared maps, and bounced ideas off residents. The students’ goal is to offer ideas for enhancing several aspects of the quality of life in the Township. They have catalogued an impressive list of strengths and weaknesses, threats and opportunities that Long Hill must manage. Their proposals touch on the Passaic River and Valley Road, the traditional villages, economic development opportunities, and the need for sidewalks and signage.
Mayor George Vitureira, Len Hamilton (Chair of the Environmental Commission) and Chris Connor (Vice-Chair of the Planning Board) were among the crowd who saw a preview of the presentation last month at the Long Hill Public Library. “This is exciting work,.” said Vitureira, “Their proposals will help us launch a town-wide discussion about Long Hill’s future.” Andrews notes that the students received valuable feedback from residents attending last month’s presentation. “These students listened and learned, and then worked long hours to refine their proposals for this final presentation.” On May 22nd, he says, “the Rutgers planners will deliver their report to the town, along with visual aids to help the conversation continue after they depart.”
Many of the students are graduating this month and will go on to work as professional planners in New Jersey and beyond. Everyone is encouraged to attend and learn more about the students’ views of the innovative opportunities available to Long Hill and its residents.
